Garden Design Trends of 2017

Posted on: 03/05/2017

In the world of gardening, fashions move quite slowly. Larger plants take a long time to establish and mature. A garden can be a slowly evolving creative project but every so often – when you move house, perhaps – you will get the opportunity to start a new project from scratch. You can choose where you want to site the patio and where you want the raised beds. Here are some of the garden trends of 2017 to inspire you.

Blending Old and New

It used to be thought that if you had an ancient feature in your garden – an aged tree perhaps or a Victorian red brick garden wall – you should theme your garden around it. These days, it is more acceptable to juxtapose newer features beside older ones. A modern patio looks great, for instance, partly shadowed by an ivy-strewn oak.

Smart Systems

You used to have to ask a neighbour to come and water the tomatoes in your greenhouse while you were away on holiday. Modern smart watering systems can be set on a timer or operated by your smart phone from your sun bed in the Canary Islands.

Fake Lawns

One feature that you never have to water is a plastic lawn. These continue to be popular as people crave the beauty of a lawn without the hassle of maintaining one.

Climate Awareness

Ask one gardener if climate change is real and they will tell you that spring comes earlier, autumn later and that summers are wetter than they ever were. Ask a different gardener and they will tell you the opposite. We aren’t quite planting olive groves – but the vineyards of southern England are now consistently outperforming their French rivals. People in 2017 are aware of climate change and planting their gardens accordingly.

Vegetable Patch

The humble vegetable patch is making a comeback in city and country gardens. Turning over a section of your garden for growing vegetables is a cheap way to fill your larder. Carrots, cabbages and courgettes are still perennial favourites, but they are now supplemented by manioc, aubergine and chillies as people embrace flavours from around the world.
