Christmas Garden Lights to Get Your Patio in The Festive Spirit

A patio we built that could do with some Christmas decorations.

With Christmas just under two weeks away, have you got your house in the festive spirit? Many houses across the country have already been decorated, with owners trying to outdo their neighbours in the street’s unofficial Christmas decoration contest. In this blog, we will be talking about how you can use different types of Christmas garden lights to light up your patio.

Areas of Focus on Your Patio

If you own a patio it’s likely you will have a few of these areas. Here are the best ways you can decorate them with lighting and the best styles of lighting you should consider for them:

  • Verandas and umbrellas – A common fixture on patios. If you choose to keep your umbrellas out in the coldest weather, you’ll want to decorate them nicely. Wrapping Christmas rope lighting around the pole of umbrellas and the wooden bars of verandas is one way you can get this area into the festive spirit. You can also hang Christmas lanterns from both of these objects.
  • Patio border – Outline with fairy lights to create a festive feeling. Rope lighting or other lighting fixtures around the outside of the patio will give off a nice festive effect. If you have steps or a path leading to the patio, you can provide safety and decoration by lighting them up!
  • Plants and pots – Wrapping plants and their pots with lighting is one way to get your greenery ready for Christmas. Wrap plants with strings of fairy lights, or if you have large trees near your patio hang lanterns from them.
  • Tables and chairs – Christmas candles in jars and lanterns on table tops will jolly up your patio for Christmas. If you have a wooden bench, snake rope lighting in between the wooden boards at the back.

Lighting Safety Tips to Consider

As we all know, lighting and more specifically electricity can be very dangerous. Here are some tips you should consider before installing any lighting in your back garden:

  • Choose the right lighting – We’re not even in winter yet, and the weather has already been below freezing all across the country. Make sure you use outdoor lighting which will be suited to these weather conditions, unlike indoor lighting fixtures.
  • Maintain lighting fixtures – If the cold and wet conditions become too much for your lighting fixtures they may begin to rust. Rust can compromise both the safety and effectiveness of the lighting, meaning you could be exposed to dangerous electric currents.
  • Stick to the wattage guides – All lighting will come with a maximum wattage, make sure you stick to this. Exceeding the maximum wattage can be very dangerous and can damage both the lights and cause potentially deadly injury.
