The Three Steps to Restoring a Neglected Garden

We see it happen all too often. A lovely garden space with great potential that has sadly become neglected and taken back by nature. You might be stuck for ideas on how to refresh your garden but luckily for you we have the knowledge you need. When restoring a neglected garden, remember the Three P’s: Pruning, Planting and Paving.

Step 1: Pruning Your Garden

Reclaiming lost garden paths and patios is a common problem that gardeners face. Shrubbery, weeds and hedges can get out of control and take over gardens. Pruning is the best way to take back land stolen by overgrown plants. Pruning a garden that has been growing by itself can be a daunting task, but it is necessary if you want to bring life back to your garden space. Pruning evergreen plants can prove more difficult as they can thrive in winter months without losing leaves. We advise that you don’t prune evergreen shrubs in winter to avoid the plants getting damaged by frost. Here is a list of the most essential pruning tools.

Step 2: Planting in Your Garden

Choose plants that won’t take over your garden. Bulbs are good value. Planting crocuses and daffodils in autumn will pay dividends every spring for years to come. Hostas are a resilient plant that can grow in medium shade and come in a wide range of shapes and colours. Another hardy plant that won’t spread everywhere (and you won’t have to remember to water every day) is the Gladioli. Once they start to grow in your garden, Gladioli in a nice sunny position with well-drained soil will look after themselves. A staple of garden hedging worldwide is the Box Hedge: easy to grow, care for and prune. Box Hedges will only require watering every now and then, which the weather will probably provide you with anyway (the perfect shrub for forgetful gardeners).

Step 3: Paving Your Garden

If you are responsible for the neglect of your garden, then maybe gardening isn’t your thing? Paving can save you a lot of hassle and can restore utility to your unloved garden. A patio is a great choice for any garden. Hardy plants can be safely segregated in pots. Tables and outdoor furniture will have a solid base to stand on. Adding garden paths and wooden decking also helps to limit the regrowth of plants.
