Peace, privacy and tranquility: these are all qualities that everybody wants from their ideal garden. With our experience in the landscaping business, we’ve seen our fair share of gardens that could (but don’t) provide these qualities. However, we can help rectify this problem. Here are some tips to help you make your own private haven and screen off your patio from the neighbours.

Make a Screen

Screens come in a variety of styles from plants to walls and provide you with all the security and privacy that you could ever want in your garden.

Believe it or not, potted plants are a good option for creating privacy. You can choose plants that fit in with your garden style and grow them to the same height as a fence or wall would be. Given that they’re not permanent they are also a good option for people renting their properties. Plants such as bamboo are in vogue at the moment, but there are hundreds of hedging plants that you can use. Leylandii are popular, but be aware that they grow about three feet a year and need regular trimming.

Good Fences Make Good Neighbours

If you’d prefer a more physical barrier between you and that noisy neighbour, then a fence is probably the best option for you. A traditional close board fence is a tried-and-tested method for making privacy in your garden. However, more recently a trend that is becoming popular is the modern-style horizontal fence. We installed a cedarwood fence in this style in a recent garden transformation

The Art of Layering

Layering is an important tool when it comes to sustaining a privacy screen. Making sure you use different materials for the screen and that the materials used are a variety of heights and sizes is important for ensuring that your screen (and therefore your privacy) can survive. If you have used plants, then there is always the risk that pests might feast on them or the weather conditions will kill them off. For this reason, layering is important to keep the screen consistent throughout. Using raised beds and different heights and dimensions in your garden is advised as it will both improve the security screen and be more pleasant to look at.
