Gardening Smart Technology

A freshly cut garden.

100 years ago, people predicted we would be feeding information into student’s brains through wires, making regular trips to the moon and wearing our own flying suits. Although these inventions have yet to come to pass, we have made some large technological advances. On the brink of an autonomous revolution, the gardening industry has seen some of the biggest steps forward. Here are some of the best smart tech garden gadgets.

Tango E5 Series II Robotic Mower

Although it may look like an extra from the popular TV show Robot Wars, it’s actually a robotic lawnmower. The Tango lawnmower made by John Deere is designed to mow your lawn by itself while you get on with other things. The mower requires boundary wires to be put around the outside of the lawn to guide the device. Capable of mowing up to half-an-acre and with a battery life of around 90 minutes the Tango is up there with the best robotic mowers.

There is plenty of competition in the robotic mower industry at the moment and it is proving to be a very expensive industry. The sale price of £2,130 on the John Deere website is not as high as some of its competition – which often cost more than second hand cars! However, the Tango is able to work on slopes and supposedly in all weather conditions.

Batavia Maxxheat 200w 3-in-1 Weeder

No this is not the proton pack from Ghost Busters, it is a device designed to get rid of weeds in your garden. The device makes short work of most weeds by blasting hot air up to 600 degrees at them. It can also be transformed into a smaller handheld device for stripping paint and can even light BBQs. All it requires is a plug socket for it to heat up then when ready it can remove the weeds in only five seconds.

The Maxxheat serves as an alternative to the potentially damaging chemicals from weed killers. The tool doesn’t require any extra chemicals or gas, making it environmentally-friendly. It comes with a two-year guarantee as well as the option for different temperature settings.

Parrot Flower Pot Monitor

This interesting device is designed to be placed in flower pots and monitors and analyse the four main parameters essential to plant growth: sunlight, moisture, fertiliser and temperature. Once paired with your smartphone, the device uses the Flower Power app to send alert notifications to your phone informing you when you should water the plants.

To enhance the growth of the plants, the device also alerts you when to fill the plant pot with fertiliser too. The Flower Power app can also identify the temperatures that different plant species need with the help of the thermistor in the Parrot Pot Monitor. The device is small and lightweight but has a battery life of six months as well as being waterproof.
